Bagini Glacier

The Bagini Glacier is a magnificent, untouched natural wonder nestled deep within the breathtaking expanses of the Nanda Devi Outer Sanctuary in the Chamoli district of the Garhwal Himalayas in Uttarakhand, India. Perched at a staggering, high-altitude elevation of approximately 4,516 meters (14,816 feet) above sea level, this stellar glacial system serves as the origin point for the crystal-clear Bagini River, which flows westward before merging with the Dunagiri glacier waters and eventually feeding into the roaring Dhauli Ganga. The trek to reach this remote glacial amphitheater is widely celebrated by mountaineering enthusiasts as an extraordinary, off-the-beaten-path expedition that typically spans 8 to 9 days. It commences from the gateway town of Joshimath and winds through rugged terrain starting from the remote hamlet of Jumma, traversing the historic, culturally rich Dronagiri village—steeped in legendary tales of the Ramayana where Lord Hanuman allegedly sourced the Sanjeevani herb—and passing through barren, wind-swept alpine campsites like Longatulli before arriving at the sprawling Bagini Base Camp. As trekkers push forward through punishing, boulder-strewn moraines, loose scree, and narrow ridges, they are constantly rewarded with jaw-dropping, panoramic spectacles of towering Himalayan giants. The majestic skyline is dramatically dominated by legendary peaks such as Dunagiri, Changbang, Kalanka, Rishi Pahar, Hardeul, and Saf Minal, whose sheer vertical rock faces and glittering ice caps pierce the azure mountain sky.
