About Dhankar Lake
Dhankar Lake is one of the quieter high-altitude destinations in Spiti Valley, located above the historic Dhankar Monastery in the Lahaul-Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh. The lake sits at approximately 4,140 metres (13,580 ft) and is surrounded by the characteristic barren, brown mountains and high Himalayan peaks of the Spiti landscape. The trek begins near Dhankar village/monastery and follows a steep, rocky trail toward the lake. Although the actual walking distance is relatively short—roughly 2 km one way on commonly described routes—the altitude and steep sections make it more demanding than the distance suggests. The trek generally takes a few hours as a day hike, and it is best to start in the morning when temperatures and winds are more comfortable. June to October is generally the practical trekking window, depending on road and trail conditions; winter brings snow and freezing conditions and can make access considerably more difficult.
The lake is particularly beautiful for photography because its blue/turquoise water contrasts with the dry landscape and snow-covered Himalayan peaks in the background.
