The stark, dramatic, and rain-shadow landscapes of Uttarakhand’s remote Nelang Valley inside the Gangotri National Park, Gartang Gali stands as one of the most architectural marvels and historically fascinating mountain cliff stairways in the entire Himalayan region. Carved directly into the sheer, vertical rock face of a massive granite cliff at an altitude of roughly 11,000 feet, this legendary 150-meter-long wooden boardwalk offers an adrenaline-pumping experience with breathtaking, bird-eye views of the roaring Jadh Ganga river flowing hundreds of feet below.The history of Gartang Gali is deeply intertwined with ancient trans-Himalayan trade routes, having been originally built centuries ago by Pathan traders from the North-West Frontier to facilitate the movement of pack animals, merchants, and goods between India and Tibet. The structure consists of a meticulously pinned framework of sturdy timber pegged into cavities in the rock wall, creating a suspended pathway that hugs the cliffside like a wooden ribbon. Following decades of neglect after the closure of the Indo-Tibet border following the 1962 war, the stairway fell into a state of severe disrepair, becoming a forgotten relic swallowed by the harsh mountain elements.However, after a massive and careful restoration effort by the Uttarakhand administration, Gartang Gali was reopened to tourists and trekkers, quickly reclaiming its status as a must-visit destination for adventure enthusiasts. Walking across the narrow wooden planks while suspended over a deep gorge offers a heart-racing thrill, complemented by the surreal, Ladakh-like scenery of the arid Nelang Valley, unique flora, and echoes of a bygone era of intrepid Himalayan trade.
