About Gulmarg–Khilanmarg
The Gulmarg–Khilanmarg Trek is a picturesque day trek in Baramulla district of Jammu & Kashmir, beginning from the beautiful mountain resort of Gulmarg and climbing toward the peaceful meadows of Khilanmarg. The trail gradually ascends through pine forests, open grasslands and scenic mountain slopes, with spectacular views opening up as you gain altitude. Khilanmarg lies at approximately 2,730 metres, while Gulmarg is around 2,650 metres, making the trek relatively accessible while still providing a rewarding Himalayan experience. The route is particularly attractive during spring and summer, when Khilanmarg’s meadows become green and colourful with alpine flowers. On clear days, trekkers can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks, including distant views toward Nanga Parbat and the Nun–Kun peaks. During winter, the landscape transforms into a snowy setting and Khilanmarg becomes associated with winter sports and snow activities.
The trek is generally considered easy to moderate, making it suitable for beginners with reasonable fitness. The complete walking distance is approximately 8–10 km for a round trip, although the exact distance varies according to the starting point and trail used. May to September is generally suitable for green-meadow trekking, while November to February is preferred for a snowy winter experience.
