About Indrahar pass
The Indrahar Pass Trek is one of the most spectacular and challenging trekking routes in the Dhauladhar Himalaya of Himachal Pradesh. The trek generally begins from the Dharamkot/Gallu Devi area near McLeod Ganj and initially follows a forest trail through oak, deodar and rhododendron vegetation before reaching the famous Triund meadow at around 2,850 metres (9,350 feet). From Triund, the landscape gradually becomes more rugged and alpine as the trail continues towards Laka and Lahesh Cave, which lies at roughly 3,500–3,600 metres. The most demanding section is the climb from Lahesh Cave to Indrahar Pass, involving steep rocky terrain, scree and sometimes snow. The pass reaches an altitude of approximately 4,342 metres (14,245 feet) and forms a natural crossing between the Kangra and Chamba sides of the Dhauladhar range. From the summit, trekkers can enjoy extensive views of the Kangra Valley, Dhauladhar peaks and surrounding Himalayan ranges. The commonly organised itinerary takes 4 days and 3 nights, with approximately 35 km of total trekking, although the actual distance varies depending on the starting point, campsites and route used. The trek is best undertaken during May–June and September–October. May and June can provide snow on the upper trail, while September and October generally offer clearer skies, dry trails and excellent mountain visibility. The monsoon months of July and August are less suitable because of heavy rainfall, slippery rocks, cloud cover and difficult trail conditions, while winter can bring heavy snow and make the pass inaccessible for normal trekking.
