About Kugti Pass

The Kugti Pass Trek is a spectacular journey from the lush valleys of Bharmour in Chamba to the rugged high-altitude landscapes of Lahaul. The trail begins through forests, traditional villages and the beautiful Budhil valley before climbing towards Kugti village, where the scenery gradually changes into vast alpine meadows and remote shepherd camps. Further ahead, the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic, with rocky slopes, rushing glacial streams, snowfields and enormous Himalayan peaks surrounding the trail. The ascent towards Alyas and finally Kugti Pass is challenging, but the reward is an extraordinary panorama of the surrounding Pir Panjal and Lahaul mountains. The route also carries strong cultural importance because Gaddi shepherds have traditionally used these high mountain crossings during seasonal migration. At more than 5,000 metres, the pass feels remote and wild, with snow, barren rock, glaciers and huge mountain walls creating a completely different landscape from the greener Chamba side.
