About Lam dal

The Lam Dal Lake Trek is one of the most beautiful and relatively remote high-altitude lake treks in Himachal Pradesh, taking trekkers deep into the Dhauladhar mountains of the Chamba–Kangra region. Lam Dal, also spelled Lamba Dal or Lama Dal, is regarded as one of the most important of the seven sacred lakes of the Dhauladhar, and it has strong religious significance among local communities, particularly during the traditional pilgrimage period around July–August. The lake lies in a spectacular alpine bowl below the Minkiani Peak/Piura Dhar area, at approximately 3,960 metres (12,990 feet). The approach is far more adventurous than the popular Triund route: depending on the itinerary, trekkers travel through Kareri Village and Kareri Lake, or approach from the Chamba side, crossing rugged shepherd trails, forests, alpine meadows, rocky ridges, streams and high mountain passes. The scenery changes dramatically as the altitude increases. The lower sections contain dense oak, pine and rhododendron forests, while the higher sections open into green alpine grasslands and eventually a stark landscape of giant boulders, scree, snow patches and glacial terrain. Kareri Lake, at roughly 2,934 m (9,626 ft), is often used as an important staging point on the Kangra-side route. Beyond it, the trail becomes considerably more demanding, particularly around the pass sections. Lam Dal itself is extremely scenic: the dark, clear alpine water sits among huge Dhauladhar peaks, and depending on the season, snow may remain around the lake and surrounding ridges. The area has very little conventional tourist infrastructure, which is part of its attraction—the feeling is much more like a genuine Himalayan wilderness expedition than a commercial weekend trek.
