About Thembang Trek
The Thembang Trek is a fascinating Himalayan adventure in West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh, combining spectacular mountain landscapes with the rich cultural heritage of the Monpa community. Thembang is a historic fortified village situated at around 2,170–2,300 metres, surrounded by lush green hills, steep gorges and views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks. At the heart of the village is Thembang Dzong, an ancient fortified settlement featuring traditional stone masonry, timber architecture, prayer walls and historic gates.The trekking experience can include forest trails, mountain streams, traditional villages and remote hamlets around the Thembang–Pangma–Thungri region. The historic Bailey Trail is particularly significant, following an old route associated with the 1913 expedition of British surveyors Bailey and Morshead. Longer versions of the route lead through challenging mountainous terrain, dense forests and high-altitude passes, making it an excellent choice for trekkers looking for an offbeat adventure in Northeast India. The trek also provides opportunities to experience traditional Monpa culture, local hospitality and the peaceful landscapes of Arunachal Pradesh.
