About Tosamaidan
The Tosamaidan Trek is one of Kashmir’s most scenic and relatively offbeat Himalayan trekking experiences, located in the Budgam district of Jammu & Kashmir in the Pir Panjal range. Tosamaidan is renowned for its vast alpine meadows, surrounded by dense deodar and conifer forests, rolling mountain slopes, streams and distant snow-covered peaks. The name is often associated with the historic description “King of Meadows,” reflecting the enormous scale and beauty of this high-altitude grassland. The standard trek generally begins around Drung and passes through forest trails and traditional shepherd routes before opening into the magnificent Tosamaidan meadow. Trekkers encounter peaceful campsites, wildflowers, grazing horses and the seasonal lifestyle of Gujjar and Bakarwal shepherd communities. Longer itineraries continue toward the Greater Lakes, adding glacial lakes and higher mountain terrain to the experience. The standard route reaches roughly 3,712 metres, while Greater Lakes itineraries may reach around 4,100 metres.
The trek is generally considered moderate, with gradual meadow sections but some longer walking days and more demanding stretches on higher routes. July, August and September are particularly attractive because the landscape is green, wildflowers are abundant and the higher trails are generally accessible. It is an excellent choice for trekkers looking for peaceful landscapes, large open meadows, alpine lakes and a less-crowded Kashmir trekking experience.
