About Turtuk–Thang
The Turtuk–Thang journey is an extraordinary experience in the far northern part of Ladakh, taking travelers beyond the popular Nubra Valley destinations toward some of India’s most remote inhabited areas. The journey generally follows the route from Hunder and Nubra Valley toward Turtuk, continuing through villages such as Tyakshi toward Thang along the Shyok River. Turtuk stands out from much of Ladakh because of its distinctive Balti heritage, traditional stone houses, fertile fields, streams and apricot orchards, creating a striking contrast with the surrounding barren Himalayan mountains. Further north, Thang is located close to the Line of Control and offers a dramatic frontier landscape of steep mountains, the Shyok River and rugged valleys. The Turtuk–Thang route is more accurately described as a scenic border-region road journey with short walks and village exploration, rather than a conventional multi-day trekking route. Visitors can explore Turtuk’s narrow lanes, local culture and surrounding landscapes, while access toward the Thang viewpoint is subject to local security procedures and permissions. The combination of spectacular Karakoram scenery, Balti culture, remote villages and borderland history makes Turtuk–Thang one of the most distinctive experiences in Ladakh.
